A visual history of the beehive, “Hives, 2400 B.C.E. – 1852 C.E.” is out!

After a few years of archiving beehive images, Apian’s fragment Hives, 2400 B.C.E. – 1852 C.E. has finally been published with RVB Books and the Festival Images Vevey. You can order it via RVB Books’ online store or in your nearest bookshop! I encourage you to avoid any large reseller such as Ama$on and to order it from your local bookshops (here is the ISBN: 979 - 1090306981) or if we meet I always carry some in my bag.

Broadly speaking, this little yellow book proposes a new history of the beehive through an array of achival images and an essay wrote in collaboration with Ellen Lapper. Since the patenting of the modern beehive in 1852, the alternative techniques prior to this homogenisation have been overlooked. Hence, this book uncovers that forgotten history in hive innovation, offering a renewed perspective to challenge conventional narratives and encourage reader speculation.

448 pages, 109 (W) × 154 mm (H). The book was designed by Nicolas Polli and was printed in Switzerland in 2020. You can find more information about it in the project section here.
